A Wisbech day centre that offers fun and companionship for retired people is fighting to survive and needs more members.

St Augustine’s Day Centre, which adjoins St Augustine's Church, has been going for nearly 30 years but in recent times has seen the number of people attending dwindle.

Carole Farnworth, one of those who runs the centre with the help of volunteers, said: “I have been here for over 20 years and have seen the numbers drop off.

“Obviously we had to close during lockdown and people don’t seem to have come back in the numbers that we used to have before the pandemic.

“It is a centre for older people and that might be one of the reasons people have stayed away as they are still feeling vulnerable, but we have precautions in place. We offer members somewhere to come and enjoy company, a two course cooked meal and games as well as other activities.

“We occasionally have entertainment in the afternoon and we also do structured arts and crafts.

“For those who are referred to us through social services it is just £9 a day and that includes the food, for those people who just want to come along it is £30, and again that includes the meal and all the activities and tea and coffees during the day.

"We also organise transport to and from the centre which is included in the cost.

“We run three days a week Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 10am to 2.30pm. When numbers allow we also play team games such as carpet bowls and it can get quite competitive.

“We are not under threat of closing at the moment, but we are worried that if we don’t get our numbers up then social services, who fund it, may look at the centre and think it is not providing value for money, and decide to close us - which would be a real shame.”
