Owners encouraged by interest in Denver Mill sale
Owners of Denver Mill say they have received a “lot of serious interest” from buyers hoping to purchase the historic complex.
Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust put the Grade II listed building on the market for £550,000 two weeks ago.
The mill and its tea shop, which has been closed since last Christmas, have generated interest from local businesses.
James Parry, from the trust, said the response has been encouraging.
He said: “We have had a lot of serious interest, including from local business who are interested in taking it on.
“Most of the expressions of interest have come from people who are viewing it as a potential business in the sense that they are viewing the mill as a central component as well as an attractive complex.
“We are optimistic that the interest we have had so far will come through in some form of offers from people we feel will be worthy future owners.”
The mill, which was built in 1835 for John Porter on the site of an earlier post mill, was gifted to the county by Edith Staines in memory of her father and brother.
It had been owned by Norfolk County Council until 1995 when it was acquired by the trust, which has spent £1 million on restoration using a Lottery grant. It also bought up some of the buildings on the complex.
The mill’s four sails were removed in 2011 after a structural failure.
Unfortunately this is not the only repair work required.
The trust, which used to be funded by a county council grant, is looking to spend around £120,000 of the money realised from the sale on repairing the mill tower.
Some of the render from the tower has fallen away due to damp but this could be replaced with a lime wash or render next year within a 16- to 18- week project.
Mr Parry, who says remaining money from the sale will be used for the trusts’ 20 additional properties, said: “It has been patched up for 50 to 60 years. The impermeable surface does not allow the brick work to breath.
“We are committed to carrying out the repairs to the tower.”
