A picture has been discovered of bomber crews at RAF Downham Market preparing for the final European raid of the Second World War.

Brian Emsley, from Welwyn Garden City, discovered the picture within one of the albums belonging to his father Edward, who had served at the base as ground crew during the war.

The photograph features Edward and his colleagues preparing a Mosquito for the raid on Kiel on May 2, 1945. Tomorrow marks the 70th anniversary.

Mr Emsley said: “When I researched Kiel and found it was the last raid of the European war, it struck me that the photograph had a historical significance.”
