Nine call outs to Welney Wash for emergency services to save motorists

Police are asking motorists not to risk ignoring the road closure signs at Welney Wash after being called out nine times to save stranded motorists.

Officers along with fire crews have been called out a total of nine times since November 1 after motorists have continued to drive down the flooded A1101 despite the obvious road closure signs.

A police spokesman said: "Since the 1st November we have been called out nine times which tie up resources to deal with each incident. This is not only affecting the police but also Norfolk Fire and Rescue who have also had calls.

"We do look at each incident we attend and depending on the circumstances we may report drivers who have ignored the road closed signs and got stuck with driving without due care and attention.

"Some of the vehicles have been left in situation until the flood water goes down to a safer level.

"We are telling drivers not attempt to cross the floods unless they are in a suitable vehicle i.e. the engine and air intake is mounted on the vehicle high up. At the moment we do not know when the road will be suitable for a standard car but it will not be sometime soon."
