George Campbell Leisure Centre in March is set to reopen its pool

The wait for swimmers to take the plunge once more at a Fenland leisure centre is almost over.

A re-opening date has finally been announced for the George Campbell in March – more than two months after it closed for essential work to be carried out.

Cllr Alex Miscandlon, Fenland Council’s portfolio holder for leisure, said there will be a short ceremony on Tuesday, February 25 to hand the centre back to its operators Freedom Leisure.

The pool closed on December 16 for what was expected to be a week of repairs and was due to reopen on December 27.

But just before Christmas Freedom Leisure announced on social media that the work was taking longer than anticipated.

They said: “We would like to notify all our customers that unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, our swimming pool maintenance work is taking longer than initially planned.

“While working in partnership with Fenland District Council to complete essential repairs, we have discovered that additional work is required. As a result, we would like to inform you that our swimming pool will remain closed until the end of January.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and truly appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

“The gym and exercise classes are unaffected by these works and remain open as usual. Our other swimming pools at Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey and Hudson Leisure Centre in Wisbech also remain open.”

In mid-January another update was given with the announcement the pool would remain closed until February 17, but that dateline was also missed.

However, Cllr Miscandlon said the centre will definitely be reopening its pool on Tuesday following a short ceremony attended by local councillors and others.

“I know it’s bee frustrating, but I’m sure people will be glad to here this news,” he said.

Freedom Leisure posted on the George Campbell’s website to say: “We are delighted to update all our customers about the reopening of our swimming pool. Our swimming pool will reopen on Tuesday, February 25 at 12pm for our public lane swim.

“Our swim school swimming lesson will restart on Saturday 1 March.

“We truly appreciate your patience while we, in partnership with Fenland District Council have been working hard to improve our swimming pool and complete important maintenance works, we are now delighted to welcome you back very soon.

“As we get ready to reopen, stay informed by following our socials or visit our app and website for the latest updates.

“Thank you for your continued support and patience.”
