Ration books, fancy dress and a special presentation to mark VE Day at Wisbech care home
Rose Lodge Care Home in Wisbech celebrated VE Day, with a morning tea party and sing-a-long to commemorate 75 years since the end of the Second World War.
Staff and residents at Rose Lodge along with people all over the UK, joined together for the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’. In light of the current situation, rather than celebrating with street parties, at 3pm on May 8, the country was encouraged to mark the day with a nationwide toast - “To those who gave so much, we thank you”.
Paying tribute to the many millions at home and abroad, that sacrificed so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today.
Residents also celebrated the occasion by being presented with Veterans badges to acknowledge the part they played during the war. Residents and staff tucked into sweet treats from the era including home-made coconut ice and peppermint crème.
Lunch followed in traditional style with a home made ration book given to each resident before they dined on fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. Staff dressed up as members of the women’s land army and other 1940s' characters.
In the afternoon a WW2 jeep and other memorabilia of the Second World War such as ration books, newspapers, military uniforms and clothing were on show for residents to enjoy.
Megan Jones general manager at Rose Lodge said: “Many of our residents have very clear memories of the Second World War, and reminisced about their experiences, so it’s a privilege to remember and celebrate with them. We have had a lovely day, and we were able to enjoy the beautiful weather outside to celebrate too we are making sure extra effort is focused on creating an enjoyable environment for all of our residents, whilst ensuring that the group activities are smaller, adhering to current social distancing advice.
Bill Tasker, resident, said: “We have had a truly lovely day today - my Veterans badge was very special and we have had a lovely lunch with our hats on and our flags- thank you to everyone for making it so special.”
