National Dog Day 2024: Readers share pictures of four-legged friends

Yesterday was the day to celebrate your four-legged friends who bring joy into your life.

National Dog Day is held on August 26 each year and was set up in 2004 to raise awareness of the number of dogs in rescue centres and encourage the adoption of these animals.

After the Covid-19 pandemic, there has certainly been a rise in the number of people deciding to welcome a canine into their homes.

However, rising costs have also meant rescue centres have seen an influx of owners having to give up their animals.

Recently, the Government has recognised the nation’s love for their animals as a new law has been introduced meaning anybody found guilty of stealing a dog in England or Northern Ireland will face up to five years in prison.

We asked for pictures of your furry friends to help celebrate the day - and you delivered as we received plenty of photos of your beloved pooches.

From tiny Dachshunds to cuddly Labradors, enjoy these pictures of your four-legged friends.
