Record number of visitors to Whittlesey’s Golden Age day
A record-breaking number of visitors flocked to Whittlesey for the latest Fenland Golden Age event on Friday June 20.
The town’s Manor Leisure Centre welcomed 213 people through its doors for the gathering, which highlights a range of services, support and opportunities for over 60s in the area.
Mingling among the free tea, coffee and cake was Golden Age team leader Cllr Sam Clark, who said: "We're passionate about these events which give people a chance to come out and be social as well as gathering all sorts of valuable information and advice about things that can improve their lives, make things easier and save them money."
Her thoughts were echoed by regular visitor Ray Thrower: "I've probably been coming along for three or four years and before that I was secretary of the Royal British Legion Whittlesey branch and used to have a stall.
"I like to see the latest innovations and what's going on - it all helps to save a few pennies,” said the 78-year-old Whittlesey local. “Some of the giveaways help around the house."
Goodie bags from the event included a free refillable water bottle, a reusable straw and a pen, while someone taking advantage of information about fall management exercise classes, community transport and dog walking services was 80-year-old Annette Glazier.
She said: "It's very good. It's proven by how many people are here!
"It's good to get all the up-to-date information."
Other stalls included details on independent living, wellbeing, finances, home security, access to carers, law, and volunteering opportunities.
The next free Golden Age event will take place between 10am and 1pm on Friday September 26 at Wisbech St Mary Sports & Community Centre.
