The total number of ballot papers verified was 22,997, and the turnout in Fenland was 30.08%.

Votes are still to come in from Cambridge, East Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Peterborough and South Cambridgeshire - with the overall announcement expected in Soham later this afternoon.

The announcement came as a shock to the party, with one candidate, Nick Brooks, who is vying for the Wisbech East county council ward, saying it was a good result but one they were not expecting.

Mr Brooks said: “We hoped it would be the case. It's in the Conservative area, so it's good to smash that.

“It is a good swing, and the Conservatives wanted a recount, but there was no need for it. It was a sign that reform is going the right way.”
