Roundabout must be created on Walsoken’s Broadend Road and A47 junction before 325 homes can be built off of Sandy Lane, council says

A new roundabout must be built on a dangerous junction before a huge housing scheme can go ahead, a council has said.

Developers want to build 325 homes off Sandy Lane in Walsoken.

But West Norfolk Council has raised fears about the impact of the extra traffic the scheme will create on the nearby Broadend Road and A47 junction.

Vivienne Spikings, chairwoman of the planning committee, said both local and national highways authorities had objected or asked for more time to assess the plan.

“And why is that?” she said. “Because it’s so dangerous, this Broadend Road junction.

“There is a desperate need for a roundabout here. We have had deaths, we have had accidents, we’ve had people taking chances.

“How many more lives need to be lost at this junction before we get it sorted?”

Some 59 of the homes will be built in West Norfolk with the rest on the other side of the Cambridgeshire border.

The final application, from Prosperity Wealth And Developments, will be decided by Fenland District Council.

West Norfolk Council’s planning committee called for Fenland District Council to only allow homes to be built after the roundabout is in place.
