London Marathon run in memory of Upwell family man

A Fenland family are planning a second major fundraising effort in memory of Glenn Cubberley whose death last year left a huge gap in their lives.

Last year the Cubberley family raised more than £3,000 by organising a charity raffle and tombola at Upwell for the Royal British Legion.

Now Cubby Challenge number two is on the cards. This time it is Glenn’s eldest son Scott who is taking the lead by running the London Marathon next month in memory of Glenn.

He will be raising money for the British Heart Foundation, the marathon’s chosen charity and a cause close to the Cubberley family’s hearts because Glenn died of heart complications in the summer of 2021 at the age of 60.

Glenn’s sister Michelle said that last year’s fundraiser was a massive success and so well supported that it almost trebled the target they had set themselves.

“We were totally overwhelmed by the support we got from the community,” she said.

“The British Heart Foundation is another charity that we are passionate about. We lost Glenn to heart disease so would love to raise as much as possible for BHF .”

Scott, aged 34, who lives at Wisbech, said it would be his first marathon but he has been training hard over the last few months and he is ready for the challenge.

“I think it will be quite an emotional day but I am looking forward to it.

On his Justgiving page he says: “Thanks to the BHF my dad lived a normal life with a heart condition for a number of years until he sadly passed away in July 2021. With your donations, I am raising money for one of the most exciting fields of research - regenerative medicine. Donations fund breakthroughs and find cutting edge new treatments for people living with heart disease. It’s my hope that one day the condition which affected my dad will be curable! The race is on to heal hearts together. Donations to my page will be sent directly to the British Heart Foundation.”

Although Scott will be doing the running, the family are going along to support him and are playing their part by helping to sign up as many sponsors as possible.
