Wisbech school's 'Pink Ladies' are raring to go for charity run

A Wisbech school hockey team is gearing up to take part in an event it has missed so much during the pandemic.

Every year, Marshland High School's hockey team - The Pink Ladies - join in with the Kings' Lynn Park Run but have been unable to do so due to lockdown restrictions and cancellations.

The school's head of PE Paul Swinburn says the girls, who will be seen running in their distinctive baby pink kit on the day, can't wait to get going.

Mr Swinburn, who will be joining the team on their run, said: "Every year the team run in aid of local charities and to help to fund a new club house for Pelicans Hockey Club in King's Lynn.

"I've been affiliated with thee club for around 20 years and it provides the pitches for all of the local hockey schools to use free of charge which is great.

"This is our fifth year running in an event, but the fourth year raising money as last year we weren't able to take part in a charity run.

"Last year through lockdown the school couldn't take part in the run but the girls and I really want to get back out there to continue to make a difference. We have already raised thousands through previous runs and we'd really like to raise more this year - anything over a thousand would be amazing."

The event will take place on Saturday, July 24 and Mr Swinburn, who is also a player and coach for Pelicans Hockey Club, is hoping the girls will be supported by many.

Not only will the team be raising funds for the hockey club but, this year, they are also donating money to Fenland Women's Refuge.

Paul, who is an ex-international hockey player, said: "Anything anyone can give to us would be hugely appreciated - whether it's 50p or £100.

"All of the girls are really excited as this will be the first time many of them have taken part.

"The run actually takes place after school breaks up for the holidays, so although we originally had 24 of us, there will now be 16 girls running plus me too but that's still plenty of us.

"After having organised this three times, I'm really hoping that it isn't cancelled again!"

Any companies or individuals wishing to kindly donate can contact Mr Swinburn directly by emailing swinburnp@marshlandhigh.co.uk.
