Newcastle 3,

Wisbech Ladies 1

Wisbech made the long journey for the quarter-finals of the HA Trophy and went out as a result of a poor second half performance on Sunday.

They started well, moving the ball nicely at pace and were rewarded with a short corner converted by Claire Apted to make the score 1-0 going into the break.

Newcastle came out fighting and pulled a goal back. Wisbech’s passing was poor and a tackle resulting in a yellow card and a short corner left Wisbech with 10 players and Newcastle bringing the score to 2-1.

With 10 minutes to go Wisbech pushed high but this left them exposed and conceded the third goal on the counter attack.

Wisbech thank those who also made the long trip, Gary Ingrey for driving the minibus and Ed Batt for his coaching.

Bury St Edmunds 2,

Wisbech Ladies 4

Wisbech started off on the back foot again conceding early in the first half when Bury’s centre forward intercepted the ball and slotted it into the back of the net.

They fell further behind early in the second half. Some hard work up front got Wisbech back into the game when Nat Ward slotted home an interception, closely followed by a short corner converted by Leanne Williamson.

Wisbech took the lead through another short corner from Claire Apted. Jane Peggs poached the ball from the defence as a result of a fantastic work rate and put the ball in the back of the net.

In a re-arranged fixture, Wisbech extended their winning streak to six games in a row and remain third in their league.

The first goal by Kate Stevenson came 15 minutes in to the first half. Holly Stevenson scored two more in the second half. A fantastic team performance, with some players playing out of their usual positions.

PoM: Jane Littlechild, Esme Atkin, Holly Stevenson. Next game: Saturday, 2.30pm v Bourne Deeping 2’s, Harecroft Road.
