Flashback to a previous Welney water gala

Welney is getting set for some splashing fun this Saturday.

The village’s water gala – with free entry – is being staged between 10am and 4pm, with a disco in the village hall to round off the day.

The gala will feature raft races on the Old Bedford River from Plover Cottage to the Bedford Bridge – and there’s an invitation to all-comers to take part.

Entry is free and owners of similar craft, including canoes, will be pitted against each other.

Children aged 8-15 can enter as long as one of their four-person team is aged 16 or over and all are wearing life preserver jackets.

The races will start at noon, but would-be contestants should book in at 11am.

Also at 11am Downham Market-based choir Inspired will perform in the village hall.

At 2pm there will be a Molly Dancing display in the hall featuring adults and children taught by Gordon Phillips of the Ouse Washes Mollies. Gala visitors can also have a go!

There will be a host of gala games outside the hall, plus a barbecue, and the event is scheduled to end at 4pm.

The disco runs from 7pm-11pm, with a bar and barbecue. Entry is 50p for children and £1 for adults. Throughout the day, a display of local history and heritage will be staged in the hall, including video footage; the village-made Millenium Map of Welney; items of memorabilia; and locally-relevant panels of the WI Centenary history collection.

Holly Trundle, one of the local event organisers with Welney’s pavilion action team, said: “The aim of the gala is to give villagers and neighbours a fun day. Any profit made will be added to our New Welney Pavilion Community Building fund.

“We decided to resurrect the gala and raft races because it has always been an enjoyable event, which has enabled our village to come to life.”

and share a day of fun together. We hope that this year`s Gala will be a happy day for everyone too.
