March student's college assignment brings in the cash for charities
A March student's college assignment for her business studies course has netted over £3,000 for charity.
The Apprentice-style task saw Leah Connolly having to organise an event for charity as part of her business studies and law course at Cambridge Regional College.
The 17-year-old chose to arrange a charity bingo night in aid of two good causes close to her heart.
The first was Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital where she had emergency treatment for damage caused to her lungs during her birth and she spent two weeks at the London hospital, and the other is for a local project - Glove Up - which is being run by RKA Kickboxing Academy in March to help tackle anti-social behaviour among young people in the area.
One of Leah's younger brothers Radley, eight, is a student at the academy.
Leah was helped by proud mum Tina Webb, who found herself having to get more involved than was originally planned. after her daughter suffered a back injury in a car crash five weeks before the event.
Tina said: "Unfortunately the accident, which happened on the way home from college, meant she wasn't able to do as much as she wanted to, including going round to local businesses asking for prizes. But we put an appeal out on Facebook and were overwhelmed with the support we got."
The event on Tuesday (21) at the United Services Club raised a whopping £3,040 to be split equally between the two charities.
Tina said: "It was an amazing night we were so busy we had to turn people away at the door. We couldn't believe how much we raised. Leah is still working on the project behind the scenes for her assignment, but we have already presented the cheque to Stuart Harris at RKA Kickboxing and we have sent another cheque to Great Ormond Street."
Leah has previously done charitable events including a bingo night for Great Ormond Street and a headshave for Cancer Research.
