Swimming pool at March George Campbell Leisure Centre will stay closed until February

Swimmers hoping to get back in the swim of it have been left frustrated over the continued closure of a Fenland pool.

The George Campbell pool in March closed on December 16 to allow for essential maintenance work to be carried out.

It was due to reopen on December 27 but just before Christmas operators Freedom Leisure announced on social media that the work was taking longer than anticipated.

They said: “We would like to notify all our customers that unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, our swimming pool maintenance work is taking longer than initially planned.

“While working in partnership with Fenland District Council to complete essential repairs, we have discovered that additional work is required. As a result, we would like to inform you that our swimming pool will remain closed until the end of January.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and truly appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

“The gym and exercise classes are unaffected by these works and remain open as usual. Our other swimming pools at Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey and Hudson Leisure Centre in Wisbech also remain open.”

This week in a further update Freedom Leisure again extended the closure time and said: “Unfortunately the repair to the swimming pool has been delayed due to more unforeseen work required following feedback from the contractors in late December 2024.

“We are truly sorry and we do realise that this will cause you inevitable inconvenience and disruption however, please be assured we are working with Fenland District Council and their contractors to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.

“It is our intention to have the pool operational again on, or around, February 17. You will appreciate that this could change but we will let you know a definitive opening date as soon as we know more.

“We will be in touch with customers most affected by the closure very soon with regards to their monthly and annual payments.

“Again, please accept our sincere apologies and we thank you for your continued patience and understanding at this difficult time.”
