A band of volunteers have walked all the way from Wisbech to Syria - and they haven’t set foot outside the country.

Seven committee members from the Wisbech branch of Save the Children took on the challenge to ‘Walk the World’ in May with a target of 2,786 miles to help boost the charity coffers after the pandemic hit fundraising last year.

The aim of the challenge was to walk the distance from Wisbech to one of the countries where the charity works to help keep children safe and healthy and the local walkers chose Syria.

The team have doggedly been walking to complete the challenge and last week finally walked the last mile tackling one of the routes offered by the Octavia Hill Walk which starts from Chapel Road car park.

They have raised £1,000 by their efforts and Vanita Lightfoot, branch secretary, said: "We are absolutely delighted, you never know when you set out to fundraise how much support you will get. But people have been really generous and we are so grateful for all their support."
