Thumbs-up for March’s ‘essential’ new loos
Plans for new toilets in March Broad Street have this afternoon been unanimously approved by Fenland’s planning committee.
The toilet block, which will replace the loos demolished earlier this year, will incorporate three cubicles – one for men, one for women, and a disabled facility.
Councillors heard the design and the siting have been changed since the application was first submitted following comments from the council’s conservation officer and due to concerns over the loss of a tree.
But committee chair, Cllr David Connor, told fellow members: “It is absolutely imperative we have this facility for March.”
Cllr Connor had raised a question over security to help prevent anti-social behaviour, which had previously been an issue in the vicinity, but having been assured there would be both CCTV and extra lighting he was more than happy with the proposal.
He described them as the “most up-to-date toilets” and said they were suitable for the 21st century.
Cllr Connor said: “It will be nice to see them built, and it is essential we support the officers who have got this right for me. I would be happy to approve them without further delay.”
Cllr Charlie Marks agreed pointing out that they would be built “in the vicinity” of the old block. He acknowledged that a nearby householder was unhappy with the siting as the toilets will abutt his boundary wall, but he said it’s a much-needed facility for March and added: “Personally I will be supporting this.”
A vote followed after Cllr Marks proposed going with the officer’s recommendation to approve, which was seconded by Cllr Sidney Imafidon, and the plans were approved unanimously.
