March town bridge repairs will see boats diverted along Old River Nene

Boat owners are being warned they will not be able to navigate through March for three months as repairs are carried out to the town bridge.

The Middle-Level Commissioners have issued a notice warning the the Old River Nene will be closed around the town bridge from November 4 to January 27 next year.

The closure is to allow the undertaking of remedial works that include vegetation removal from the structure and cleaning, brickwork repointing, replacement of deteriorated brickwork, localised reinforced concrete repairs, strengthening of the bridge structure and supports, and painting of the bridge.

Other navigable parts of the river will remain open but there will be a diversion route in place via the Twenty-Foot River (subject to bridge height) or via the Forty-Foot and Sixteen-Foot waterways.

If the repair works are completed ahead of January 27 then the bridge will reopen sooner.
