Wisbech Town Council clerk Terry Jordan discusses upcoming events and Christmas preparation at latest council meeting
Wisbech Town Councillors were told of upcoming themed markets and the opening of the Pavillion Cafe in the park, at their meeting on Monday.
To help bring people into the town centre, themed markets are going to be organised to increase footfall.
The announcement was made during town clerk Terry Jordan’s report. He said a farmers’ market is being held on March 16 as well as a ‘Minis in the Market Place’ event on March 23.
Mr Jordan said the new Wisbech Market Place Cleansing Contract – with an initial duration of two years – commenced on February 10 and said “at the moment things are particularly looking good”.
Mr Jordan said the allotments continue to do well and still have waiting lists.
He said back in July the Environment Public Space Committee decided because of complaints from the public and because most of the councils were not allowing bonfires on allotments sites, there was a ban on fires.
The ban has now been revised and they are now allowed but under very controlled circumstances.
Mr Jordan said: “They can only take place in an incinerator bin and only for two weeks in the months of March and October between the hours of 9am and 5pm. Also, only dry materials can be burned, not household waste.
The Christmas fair committee will have its first meeting of 2025 on March 4 to plan for the event on December 14.
Mr Jordan mentioned the Unsung Heroes Awards ceremony which took place on January 15.
“It was extremely successful, I think everybody there would share that view”, he said.
Arrangements are being made jointly by the town council and the Wisbech branch of Royal British Legion for an event in Wisbech Park on May 8 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. It is anticipated there will be music and other activities from 5pm.
The cafe in Wisbech Park will reopen under new ownership on March 2.
