Whittlesey Town Council “strongly recommends refusal” of Johnsons Aggregates Recycling’s plans to expand production at Saxon Pit
Concerns have once again risen over a planning application which could see an aggregates company increase its production.
Dust, noise, emissions and loss of amenities are the reasons that Whittlesey Town Council has “strongly” recommended the refusal of Johnsons Aggregates Recycling’s plans to expand manufacturing at Saxon Pit again.
Last year, a consultation was held over the proposals, which saw the authority object to them due to more than 600 dust, odour or noise complaints being sent to the Environment Agency, Fenland District Council, Environmental Health and Cambridgeshire County Council over the course of two years.
At the time, the company claimed that its operations had “negligible effect” in that regard.
Following this, Johnsons submitted amendments for the plans to demonstrate how it will tackle the issues, including a variety of restrictions on site activity, dust and odour control and monitoring, as well as an upgraded complaint form system; however, the town council has still rejected it.
“The town council strongly recommends refusal of this application due to the significant and detrimental impact it would have on the health and wellbeing of Whittlesey residents,” its response said.
“Concerns include excessive dust, persistent noise pollution, harmful vehicle emissions, and a severe loss of residential amenity, such as the ability to enjoy private outdoor spaces.”
The 80-hectare site joins onto housing estates, gardens, a railway line and industrial units.
If approved, the company says the plans will improve its flexibility and increase the annual throughput of waste material.
A consultation period has now opened, giving the public until Saturday, May 31, to submit comments here.
