Long Sutton Speed Watch appeals for community support
Volunteers are appealing for help to tackle speeding in their community and prevent a death.
Long Sutton Parish Council Community Speed Watch is now down to just two members and is desperately appealing for new recruits to come forward.
Speed watch teams need a minimum of three people in order to run sessions in the town’s hot spots.
One of the two remaining members is Long Sutton parish councillor Frank Henrich-Tiller.
He said: “If people in the community are concerned at the speed of vehicles in their particular neighbourhood then perhaps they can support us and give us a bit of their time for an hour or two which is what we are looking for.
“Speed watch acts as a deterrent to any drivers that are ignorant of the speed watch.
“Ultimately we want to prevent any accidents or deaths.”
Community speed watch teams have been running in the county for ten years with some success.
Volunteers man a speed gun and take down the registration numbers of speeding drivers.
These details are passed onto the police who send warning letters to the driver,
Coun Henrich-Tiller said: “The majority of drivers say they didn’t realise and didn’t appreciate the speed and thank us for what we are doing.
“One or two have sworn at me out of their window and others say ‘get a life’. But it is not about getting a life but saving a life.”
Coun Henrich- Tiller said that the town’s hot spots were Gedney Road and Bridge Road along with Station Road and Roman Bank at certain times of the day.
He also said that he found the role rewarding.
Coun Henrich-Tiller said: “As a parish councillor part of my duty is to do what I can to help the community.
“We try to go to locations where there are pedestrians and traffic, especially outside schools.”
Community speed watch will be holding online sessions training sessions for volunteers who are interested in joining schemes across the area.
Sessions will be held on Tuesday, July 6; Thursday, July 8; Wednesday, July 21; Monday, August 2; Monday, September 6; Monday, October 4.
