Tribute paid to former March mayor Bernard Keane
Councillors stood for two minutes’ silence at their meeting last night to remember former March mayor Bernard Keane who sadly died on Sunday.
Bernard, 93, who died at his home in Scargells Lane, with his wife Sylvia by his side, was a former town and district councillor.
He served as the Mayor of March three times in 2002/3, 2003/4 and again in 2011/12.
Bernard was a former businessman in the town, and was a member of many local organisations including March Lions, and was a stalwart of the March Veteran and Vintage Cycle Club for many years.
In recent years he has become a regular at the March Veterans Breakfast Club.
He also always took part in the annual Remembrance Day parade.
In years past he was an organiser of the March Gardens Competition, which was run in conjunction with the Fenland Citizen and enjoyed helping to judge the entries.
He served on Fenland District Council for March East from May 1999 until May 2015. During that time, he served as council chair from 2007-08 and 2008-09 and was a member of the following committees: environmental services, leisure, appeals, licensing, planning, overview and scrutiny and corporate governance.
The flag at Fenland Hall will be flying at half-mast until after Bernard’s funeral.
