Tributes paid to 'legend of the paddock' motorbike racer Gary Arden




Tributes have been paid to local motorcycle racer Gary Arden who has sadly died following a crash.

Gary, from Wisbech, who was taking part in a test session at the NG Road Racing opening event of the season at Brand's Hatch has been described by those who knew him as a "legend of the paddock" and a "true gladiator".

In a statement NG Road Racing Club said: "On Friday March 24 motorcycle racer Gary Arden crashed heavily sustaining serious injuries.

"There were no other riders involved. The session was immediately red flagged and Gary was treated at the scene by the circuit medical team, before being transferred to the circuit medical centre.

"He was then airlifted to King's Hospital, London, where he underwent emergency surgery. It is with great regret, we have to announce that Gary from Wisbech, later succumbed to his injuries.

"NG Racing are now working with the coroner, police and the Auto Cycle Union in order to investigate the full circumstances of this tragic accident.

"The NG Road Racing family pass on our deepest condolences to Gary's family, friends and team members."

Following the posting of the statement on the club's Facebook page many tributes were paid to Gary including team members who said he would be sadly missed.

Another tribute said: "A true legend of the paddock. A friend, a gentleman and a 100% racer and top fella. You will be missed by hundreds. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him will have a funny story to remember."

Another tribute described him as a "really lovely guy and loved and respected by all who knew him. A bricklayer by trade he loved riding and racing motorcycles and was always willing to help others and an asset to any paddock."

A fellow racer wrote: "Had some great races with Gary over the years. A truly great guy and a nicer person in the paddock you wouldn't meet. He certainly loved his racing. RIP mate."

Another described him as a "true Gladiator".
