Nicole Thompson, home manager and Diane Parker, senior carer, had their heads completely wet-shaved for their chosen charity in front an audience of staff, residents, friends and family.

In total, they managed to raise £1,000 and a further £500 was donated to the pair by the head office of the company which operates the Kirkgate Street care home.

Last year, Nicole dyed her hair a different colour, every month for the whole year, to represent the various cancer awareness colours and raise the profile of the different types of cancer that people can suffer from.

Nicole said: “When I told my daughters that I would be shaving my head completely bald, they were completely shocked because my hair and the way it looks is a very big deal to me. It is a very dramatic look but I wanted to make a huge gesture to show support for such a fantastic charity like Macmillan.

“Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way or another and I think that we all need to work together to find a cure for a disease that destroys so many people’s lives. I was just glad that I had someone to go through the ordeal with me and while I definitely feel much colder than I did before, I think that it was definitely worth it!”

Diane added: “Nicole and I wanted to do something special and very different to raise money for a brilliant cause. It was very daunting at first, especially as we had a completely wet shave, but I am glad that we have been able to raise a significant amount of money and look forward to seeing what we can come up with next year.”

Dove Court Care Home forms part of Larchwood Care and provides residential care for up to 76 older people.
