Updates on Wisbech Splashpad and new bowls green during latest town council meeting

Some exciting announcements were made during the latest Wisbech Town Council meeting.

On Monday evening, councillors were updated with how projects are going in the town, including a new bowls green and additions to the Splashpad.

Cllr Samantha Hoy said the Splashpad in Wisbech Park is getting enhancements as part of Fenland Inspire.

It is getting a few extra water features as well as some covers and benches. The parts are on order and are coming from Canada, she said, and should arrive in the next eight to nine weeks.

Cllr Hoy said: “We might not get them in for this summer, but we have them on order.

“In terms of the canopy and the benches, which were due to be installed imminently, we now need planning permission.”

This means that the temporary canopy structure cannot be installed this year. However, to get around this problem, Cllr Hoy said they are going to put out some picnic benches and some parasols, which the nearby café said they would take in and out at the start and end of the day.

She added: “It will see us through the summer, and then next year we will have the full proper canopy. We are just trying to find a solution so people don't keep getting burnt in the sun.”

Cllr Steve Tierney mentioned the current situation with the new bowls green, which is also part of Fenland Inspire.

He said the new facility is progressing, and they have had several meetings about it.

“We want to make sure we get the specifications right, and want to make sure it is disability-friendly so everyone can go and use it”, Cllr Tierney said.

“I think this is going to happen fairly quickly, and when it does, we are going to have a lovely new bowls green which people have told me many times that they would like.

“We used to have a lot more bowls facilities than we have now, and some people really enjoy the sport and also the community nature of it – the fact that they can chat to people and get out and about.”
