A young naturalist was over the moon to receive a handwritten reply from his hero, Sir David Attenborough, for his “splendid” book.

Seven-year-old Charlie Dewhirst penned a children’s guide book on his dream destination the Galápagos Islands over the Easter holidays.

He spent hours putting together the 20-page handwritten book, Charlie’s Guide Book to the Galápagos, which he sent off to the legendary broadcaster and naturalist.

And a surprise handwritten reply from Sir David dropped on to the doormat of his Upwell home.

His parents Gavin and Laura have been delighted with Sir David’s comments about the book.

Mrs Dewhirst said: “He was absolutely over the moon to receive the letter.

“He was ecstatic and went into school as proud as Punch.

“He got a beautiful reply saying how splendid the book was.

“Charlie says he is going to be a cross between David Attenborough and Bear Grylls.

“Ever since he was tiny, Charlie has been focused on anything animal-related and the Galápagos is a dream destination for him.”

Charlie was inspired to put pen to paper ahead of a project on the Galápagos, which will be studied at the Beaupre School in Outwell.

He realised that there was not a guide book on the island after a trip to the library.

The dedicated youngster then spent hours putting together the book, which includes how to get there, unique features of the islands and facts about the animals.

As he was planning to send the book to Sir David, Charlie ensured the handwriting was his best. Mrs Dewhirst said: “He really wanted it to be perfect.”

Charlie has been fascinated by nature since he was tiny and has built up a lot of information.

Mrs Dewhirst said: “We have a collection of fossil shells, snail shells and bits of egg shells and I don’t know how many books. He is always reading.”

The letter from Sir David reads: “Thank you very much for sending me your splendid book about the Galápagos. I think it is excellent.

“I hope you manage sometime to see these wonderful creatures for yourself.”
