Fenland volunteers to be thanked for work at community living rooms

Volunteers will soon be thanked for their hard work running warm spaces for people to pop into.

Cambridgeshire ACRE is a charity that runs 10 community living rooms in Fenland. These living rooms are open every week for a few hours.

The living rooms in Christchurch, March, Manea, Wimblington, Chatteris and Doddington offer a warm space with refreshments and quizzes - and organisations pop in to offer support and advice.

A thank you buffet lunch will be taking place to thank volunteers who keep the community living rooms running.

Lucille Bingham, village agent for Fenland for Cambridgeshire ACRE, said: “They work week in and week out providing refreshments, fun, games and lots of chat and laughter for everyone who comes through the door.

“We have had St John Ambulance pop into the community living rooms doing defib demos, the local fire community officer pop in and talk about fire safety in the home, and more.

“But none of this would be able to be done without the volunteers who set up, make teas/coffees, arrange the quiz or bingo, who talk and listen to everyone and make everyone feel welcome.

“These community living rooms and the volunteers are proving a much-needed lifeline to many rural residents.

“Our community living rooms are well attended by many people in the more rural villages, where transport is a big problem.

“They provide a meeting place where isolated people come along without the worry of cost.”

The thank you event is taking place on Wednesday, October 30 at the Wordsworth room in March Library.
