Gorefield girl Georgie is a 'Wildlife Warrior'
A group of animal lovers, including a student from Gorefield, are hoping to raise awareness of the plight of British wildlife.
The UK Wildlife Warriors, including Georgie Massen who studied at University Academy Long Sutton and The Elm Road Primary School in Wisbech, are hoping to educate young people about the impact we are having on wildlife in our country in an engaging but light hearted and fun way.
The group, which is made up of five postgraduate students currently taking their master’s degree at the University of Bath, are raising awareness through posters and crafting videos which are easy for people of all ages to understand.
Georgie, who is working towards completing her Master’s degree in molecular bioscience, said: “All of the species we are focusing on have been identified as being in danger of becoming endangered if we don’t do something.
“We decided to focus on species from the UK so that they are relatable and people are aware of them - people are really shocked when they realise that hedgehogs are in a dangerous position because so many people love them.
“Our aim is to educate young people on the vulnerable species in the UK and to encourage them to care about the wildlife and the environment around them.
“With this in mind we have put together posters in a format which is easy for children to read but we also wanted them to appeal to everyone, so they can be read and understood by everyone.”
The group have set up a Facebook page where free information can be accessed, as well as information on projects and activities which can be tried out at any time, giving families of all ages the chance to engage with the wildlife in their surroundings.
Georgie said: “We’ve got loads of things for people to do, such as a video which shows them how to make an eco-brick puffin, and we thought it would be fun for people to do during the Christmas holidays.
“All of the videos have been designed with the national COVID restrictions in mind, meaning they are easy to do and only require readily available household items for example cardboard boxes plastic bottles.”
In addition to hedgehogs and puffins, the group will also be focusing on adders and starlings specifically looking at each animal every week.
Although the project is only set to run for a month, there is a chance that it will run longer dependent on interest and engagement.
Georgie said: “We will be doing this for four weeks as part of our scientific communication project but we have until February to work on the campaign so we could do more if there is enough interest.”
