Weekly food collection scheme for Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge, Sutton St James, Sutton St Edmund and Tydd St Mary by March 2026
Planning applications are due to be submitted later this year as big changes are on the horizon for how a county handles its waste.
Lincolnshire County Council and the area’s seven district councils - including South Holland District Council - whose jurisdiction includes Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge, Sutton St James, Sutton St Edmund and Tydd St Mary - have to bring in a new weekly food collection scheme from March 2026 in order to boost the area’s recycling rates.
The county is expecting to see 7% increase in rates if it moves to anaerobic digestion instead of sending the black big bag waste to be incinerated at North Hykeham.
In an unrelated project, South Holland District Council has begun a consultation on whether to move from bags to wheelie bins.
The latest Food Waste Project update to last Thursday’s Lincolnshire Waste Partnership states that funding has been secured for vital schemes.
It says: “Lincolnshire County Council have made their key decision and have secured the capital funding required to modify the existing waste transfer stations to accept food waste, with the addition of a new waste transfer station in the greater Lincoln area.
“A contractor has been engaged to undertake pre-construction design for the modifications to the existing transfer stations with planning applications to be submitted in the later half of 2024 for each site. This will secure a tipping point for East Lindsey, West Lindsey, Boston Borough, South Holland, North Kesteven and South Kesteven.
“Potential sites for a new waste transfer station to service the City of Lincoln have been identified in the Greater Lincoln area and discussions are ongoing with multiple landowners. Further to the above Lincolnshire County Council have undertaken a procurement exercise to secure anaerobic digestion capacity for the future food waste for the county. The tender period has now closed, and the returns are being evaluated with an anticipated contract award by the end of July.”
The report also states there is a ‘joined up approach to procurement for internal and external caddies including a consistent colour scheme across all partner districts’.
