What the latest Census data shows about Fenland
The latest data from the 2021 Census shows almost one in 10 people living in Fenland were born in an 'other' European country - and that we have a high level of deprivation.
Shockingly over a third (37.4%) of Fenland households are deemed to be 'deprived' in at least one of the four indicators: education, employment, and health.
The Office for National Statistics this week released further details from the once-a-decade population survey, which was completed by every household in the country last year, and which gives more details on the make-up of the population.
It found that just under 17% of Fenland families are deemed deprived in two of the dimensions of deprivation used to classify households.
Wisbech South and Peckover was the area with the highest number of deprived households in dimensions at 20.4% and March East had the second highest number at 19.6%.
The latest figures also show:
That 9.7% of residents in Fenland were born in an 'other' European country (not the UK or Ireland). That compares to 12.1% for South Holland, 6.1% for King's Lynn and West Norfolk, 15.9% for Peterborough and 20.4% for Boston.
Only 67.2% of people have a UK passport.
There are more people living in Fenland aged under 14 (16.1%) than there are those over 75 (10.7%). The median age of people living in the district is 44.
Fenland has 6.5% of households that are a lone parent family with dependent children.
There are twice as many families with dependent children where the parents are either married or in a civil partnership (10.8%) than there are families with a cohabiting couple (5.8%). Overall nearly half of people aged 16 or over are either married or in a registered civil partnership (45.4%).
But more than one in 10 people aged over 16 (11%) are either divorced or have had their civil partnership dissolved.
More than a third of households in Fenland consist of two people(38.2%). Another third (29%) have just one person. Three people households were the third most prevalent at 15.7%.
