When David Bowie played King’s Lynn

Music legend David Bowie, who has died aged 69, once played in King’s Lynn.

Bowie appeared at the Maid’s Head in Tuesday Market Place on November 27, 1966, as David Bowie and The Buzz. In fact, it was the final gig for the four-piece.

The night Bowie came to West Norfolk was recalled in the Lynn News three years ago by George Chappell, who booked the band.

Mr Chappell, of Hillington Square, who has since died, used to book bands at the venue throughout the 60s.

He told the Lynn News of January 11, 2013: “I was offered a band called David Bowie and the Buzz for £20 for the entire band. Colin Atkinson, the landlord, thought they were too expensive but we let them play because I believed that the singer could progress.

“We were charging five shillings (25p) to gain admission. On talking to Bowie I understood it was his very last gig with the Buzz.”

Mr Chappell said that the Sunday night live acts he booked often had played the previous night at the Boston Gliderdrome, although in this case it appears that Bowie and his band had appeared the day before at Gosport in Hampshire. David Essex was a regular at the Maid’s Head in those days too.
