Wife of seriously-injured Lynn speedway rider describes ‘miracle’ 24 hours

The wife of seriously-injured King’s Lynn speedway rider Lewis Kerr has thanked fans and wellwishers for their support during what she described as “the worst time of our lives.”

Jessie Kerr said her husband had been through a “miracle” 24 hours after coming out of the coma he had been in following a horror crash on Sunday which left him fighting for his life.

A message posted on the rider’s Twitter account this morning said: “Lewi has had an incredible 24 hours waking up.

“Yesterday, I got a very emotional cuddle and he even rubbed my belly and said our baby’s name.

“Doctors say very long road ahead and it’s early days, but what a fighter.

“So stunned at the support from everybody, the speedway world has literally amazed me, as has everyone else.

“I will never be able to express just how thankful I am for every single act of support.”

The 25-year-old, who rides for the King’s Lynn Stars, was competing for Newcastle in the Premier League Fours at Peterborough on Sunday when the crash happened.

The Snettisham racer was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, after sustaining severe head injuries in the incident, which was witnessed by Jessie and both of his parents.

Yesterday, Mrs Kerr, who is five months pregnant, announced that her husband had come out of his coma and was breathing unaided.

She said: “This is amazing and although it’s early days and we are not out of the woods by any means, it’s a positive.”

A fundraising account in support of Mr Kerr has now raised more than £7,500.
