LEARN MOREOne of Wisbech's most loved features - the fountain in St Peter's Church Garden - is to be replaced after vandals once again struck causing major damage to the structure.
This time last year Fenland Council agreed to stump up £3,000 to repair the fountain and surrounding pond after it was destroyed by vandals - it was the second attack in just eight months - but warned it would be the last repair because of the expense.
However, a council spokesman confirmed on Monday that it would be repaired again - but would not be restored exactly as before.
She said: "This time it will replaced with a water feature (cascading water) rather than as an ornamental fountain - as that is the bit that gets damaged. Works will begin shortly – we don’t have the date for this yet though."
Last year Coun Pete Murphy said: "We don't want to be defeated by these senseless criminals but we can't afford to keep spending taxpayers' money repairing the damage they cause."
