Wisbech Mayor Peter Human officially opened the new facility which has relocated from its premises in Post Office Lane into nearby Etcetera, which is also home to the town's Post Office.

Volunteers will continue to man the help desk from Monday to Friday between 10am and 1pm but visitors will be free to help themselves to brochures and leaflets at other times.

But The hours the help desk is manned could be extended if more volunteers are willing to give a few hours of their time.

Ideally volunteers would have a positive attitude to Wisbech, good local knowledge and the ability to retrieve information using the computer. Anyone wishing to volunteer can either phone or drop into the centre for a chat.

As well as information about facilities and events in Wisbech the centre offers a wide range of leaflets about attractions to visit across the East of England and beyond, perfect for days out, ideas of where to take visiting friends or to occupy the children during school holidays.

Help with public transport queries is also available.

The information centre was set up by WisARD (Wisbech Area Regeneration and Development Trust) following the loss of the service originally provided in Fenland Council's one stop shop. It is hoped the move to Etcetera will make the venture more financially viable and also increase the number of people accessing the service.

Richard Barnwell, chairman of WisARD stressed the importance of tourism to Wisbech and thanked Ray and Jan Wicks and the information centre volunteers for making the new facility possible.

The centre has a new phone number 01945 232456.
