‘Wonky’ tree helps draw record crowds to March Christmas lights switch-on
March Christmas Lights Switch-on attracted record crowds after the town hit not only national but international headlines this week for its ‘wonky’ tree.
The switch-on on Friday proved a massive hit with locals and organisers were delighted by the numbers who turned out to enjoy the entertainment and watch the lights being switched on.
The ongoing rejuvenation works in Broad Street meant that was unavailable for the usual fair rides and stalls, but that did not stop the fun of the evening, as the event stretched along High Street instead.
Sarah Lemmon, March Town Council clerk, said the event undoubtedly attracted people that would not normally come along, because of all the furore over the tree, which has been dubbed the ‘Leaning Tower of March’ because of the way it leans in one direction.
As usual Father Christmas was the guest of honour arriving to hand out sweets to the crowds and to help light up the town.
