Another defeat for Wisbech St Mary but good win for March Town Reserves




Wisbech St Mary suffered their ninth defeat in 11 Cambs County Premier games this season when they went down 4-2 at home to Ely City Reserves on Saturday.

Saints found themselves 3-0 down at half time after conceding three goals in the last nine minutes of the first half. It was soon four after the break before Boston Cash and Lucas Ablett gave the score some respectability.

March Town Reserves are up to third and just a point from top spot after a 4-3 win at sixth-place Isleham United. Sub Matteo Cavozzi scored twice and Liam Monaghan also netted after coming off the bench, Adam Mills getting the other goal.

After trailing 1-0 at the break, Mills levelled with a fantastic finish from the edge of the 18 yard box. Cavozzi then got his brace before the home side pulled one back from a free kick. Monaghan then scored the team’s goal of the season when he rolled his man 30 yards out and rifled his shot in off the bar to make it 4-2.

Another Iseham goal made it a nervy finish, especially with Sean White in the sin bin, but The Hares hung on for a deserved three points.

Manager Kieran Daplyn said: “It was a really good game from both teams. Isleham are a really good side so to take four points off them this season was a real positive. We are right up there heading into the Christmas break.”

Outwell Swifts are joint top in 1B after a 3-0 win at Eynesbury Rovers Reserves. Adam Lewis scored two and there was also an own goal, with George Melton named man of the match for a tireless display in the centre of the park.

In the same division, bottom side Benwick Athletic (Christchurch) drew 2-2 at home with mid-table March Town United A, Jamie Gray-Esson and Dayne Moore scoring for the home team and Micah-Joe Baxter and Fyn Smith netting for March.

Chatteris Town Reserves are through to the Quarter-Finals of The Creake Charity Shield after a great 3-1 home win over Needingworth United in an all-1B affair. Goals came from Alfie Richardson, Charlie Munns and Lilies man of the match Ben Kimberley.

Wisbech St Mary Reserves won 4-2 at Crusaders 2019 in 2B, while Manea United lost 4-2 at Burwell. Wisbech St Mary Development A stay top of 3B after a 3-0 home win over FC Kennett.

Over in 4C, AEK United of Guyhirn stay top after a 4-3 win at Manea United Reserves, Luke Gale, Ben Pearce and a double from sub Kensey Carter doing the damage for AEK, who saw Andrew Walker red carded.

Wisbech St Mary B are four points behind in second place after a 7-0 win at Outwell Swifts Reserves and Wisbech Town Acorns are sixth after a 5-4 win at Needingworth United Reserves, the goals shared out between Cody Martin, Emilio Mead, Richard Tarcsai, Arpad Vajda and Derren Singleton’s 12th of the season.

Three Fenland 4C sides were involved in the Cambs Junior Cup. Wimblington Reserves went out 5-4 on penalties to Bar Hill after a 2-2 draw, Dale Richardson and Joshua Ingram netting for Wimblington.

Chatteris Town A were thrashed 8-1 at home to 3B side Willingham Wolves and March Academy were beaten 3-0 at 4B strugglers Milton A.

In the Peterborough League Premier, Whittlesey Athletic Reserves lost 4-3 at Oakham United and Chatteris Town went down 2-1 at Ramsey Town, Seb Parnell scoring and keeper Jordan Packi named man of the match.

Whittlesey Athletic Development boosted their Division One survival hopes with a 6-1 home win over Yaxley Reserves. In the Lincolnshire Junior Cup, Division Two side Tydd lost 2-0 at Premier Division outfit Moulton Harrox.

Fifth-place Marshland Saints won 6-4 in Division Three North of the Anglian Combination.
