Wisbech lose skipper in narrow UCL Premier Division North defeat to Gresley Rovers
Fenmen coach Ross McNeil said an early injury to skipper Kyle Barker was a bitter blow to take in their 1-0 defeat at Gresley Rovers on Saturday.
Baker was taken to hospital accident and emergency after receiving a nasty stud injury to his lower thigh just five minutes into the United Counties Premier North clash at 13th-placed Rovers.
The only goal of the game came from Dylan Hunniford 14 minutes into the second half.
"It was a tough away game and we already had a couple of injuries and suspensions which didn't help us going into the game," said McNeil.
"We then lost Kyle after a few minutes and to be honest we didn't get going after that. We had a few chances in the first half but they were the better side in the second half.
"To be honest we huffed and puffed and missed a golden chance to equalise with virtually the last kick of the game.
"We didn't deserve much from the game and it's not often we've said that recently."
The Fenmen are now fifth from bottom and four points clear of the relegation area, although they have played more games than the teams below them.
On Saturday, they entertain mid-table Newark & Sherwood United in another important game.
"It's another big home game for us," admitted McNeil.
"We had a good chat with the players after today and the lads are aware that they let themselves down and didn't reach the levels they had in recent games."
