March Bears rugby side set up league decider against Shelford III with Mildenhall victory
March Bears needed to win at the weekend to have any chance of winning the league this Saturday against Shelford III, and did just that.
Mildenhall were one of only two teams who had beaten March in the league this season, so a tough game was anticipated – but the Bears maintained their 100% home record.
March gave probably one of their best performances of the season, storming to a 38-0 win.
Things started well and seven minutes in, an alert March took two quick penalties – allowing captain Billy Dean to crash over for a try converted by Sam Howat.
Eight minutes later a great move by the backs allowed the forwards to follow up and Lee Kupyn, ever awake to an opportunity, took the ball and went over for try number two.
For the next 20 minutes the game was played mostly in their opponents’ half, but they held out. However, a fantastic try worthy of any high quality rugby team saw Adam Munro palm overhead a pass direct to full back Callum Campbell, who went over in the corner for the Bears’ third try.
Twenty minutes into the second half, a Mildenhall lineout saw them over-commit and allow Harvey Davis to exploit with a break through, which was followed up by Bryn Pughsley on a fantastic angled run. He went over for try number four and probably one of the tries of the season - and to cap it Sam Howat converted for a seven point score.
March continued to press and recycle the ball, and so after 67 minutes Billy Dean doubled his tally with a try under the posts, converted by Sam Howat.
Mildenhall continued to battle, but with March in this mood there was no way they could break their line as not a tackle was missed – and just before full-time Lee Kupyn also managed to double his tries for the day and went over.
Sam Howat finished the scoring with another conversion, with the final score at 38-0 giving March full points – including the bonus point.
The final game of the season at Shelford means that the winner takes the league, so the team is looking forward to strong support on the day.
