March Bears record biggest win of the season

March Bears 71, St Neots 0

Easter Counties Greene King Division One West

This was anticipated to be a very strong challenge for March Bears especially as they were faced with opponents far bigger and more experienced at Elm Road on Saturday.

However, the Bears had a fantastic game plan of fast and constant rotation of the ball through their backs, initiated by constant fast scrum play, plus being first at the breakdown and this allowed March to rack up 11 tries, eight of which were converted, to hit their highest total for the season

Still unbeaten and now six points ahead at the top of the league, this was a great spectacle for those lucky enough to see such a complete performance.

The scoring started in the fourth minute when a St Neots missed touch with a penalty was gathered by Sam Howat who then charged down the outside and fed the flying Ciaran Brown to go over for a try converted by Howat.

Straight from the kick-off off Lee Kupyn cut through the St Neots pack finding Bryn Pughsley who stepped through four tackles to double the score with another Howat converted try to it 14-0 in the first five minutes.

In the 18th minute, the Bears opted for a scrum penalty, drawing the large but ineffective St Neots scrum in and allowing a fast backs passing movement which saw Callum Campbell go over in the corner for an unconverted try

Three minutes later Will Paul jinked his way through the St Neots defence to go over under the post for a Howat converted try.

Barely a quarter of the way through the game and March Bears were already 26-0 up and they added to the score after 39 minutes with another good backs move set up by the Bears’ increasingly dominant scrum. This time it was Brown again to get his brace and again converted by Sam Howat.

Straight from the kick-off, the March scrum drove and fed the ball to wing forward Leon Tulip for an unconverted try taking the half-time score to an unbelievable 38-0.

The second half saw March run in three fast tries from the start through Callum Campbell, Will Paul and Danny Grieve, two of them converted by Howat, taking the score out to an unassailable 57-0 with only three-quarters of the game gone.

In quick succession, March emptied their entire bench of seven subs on to the field but it made no difference as March still held the big but tiring St Neots pack, and then a solo breakaway by man of the match Kuypn saw him feed Pughsley to allow him to go over under the posts for a try converted by Howat.

However, Paul was not finished and a solo run finished off the scoring, racking up yet another hat-trick, Howat getting his eighth conversion.

This was March Bears’ best performance of the season, emphasising what a great squad they have become.

Next Saturday sees them take on second-placed Cantabs at Elm Road.
