Saints' Stuart levels but Downham net late goal

Stuart Beckett bagged the Saints’ goal but they went down to away goals by Jack Brand and Pat Yates.

After failing to beat the offside trap on numerous occasions, Brand finally put Downham ahead with a well-worked goal in the 20th minute.

Shortly after their opening goal, Matty Bussens’’ afternoon was ended prematurely when he sustained a knee injury.

This seemed to lift the home side and they were rewarded with goal on the stroke of half-time from Beckett.

Wisbech St Mary started the second half stronger and some good goalkeeping from Lewis Truman kept the scores level.

Brand had an effort ruled offside before a late free-kick in added time saw Yates soar above the home defenders to secure all three points and a fourth win in five.

Next Saturday tenth-spot Wisbech St Mary entertain leaders Harleston Town, who have won seven and lost one of their nine league games; and on Tuesday in the league cup, Wisbech St Mary have a swift reunion at fifth-position Downham Town at the Memorial Field.

This was a very physical game of football from start to finish, which did not suit the home team. March did not get going until the last 20 minutes of the match, which by that time they were 3-0 down.

However March were the more dominant team in that time, but were unlucky not to score on three occasions.
