Busy summer for Wisbech Wheelers cycling club

Wisbech Wheelers cycling club had a busy summer as members went in different directions to take part in various events.

Veteran riders Roger Sewell and Denese Hallahan and junior William Horspool rode the club 10’s at King’s Lynn’s Tottenhill course, Spalding’s 10TT at Pode Hole and events at Newark, Cambridge and Breckland.

Hallahan rode the King’s Lynn 10, finishing in 33.26. The following week saw Sewell and Kayleigh Wales join in on the action. All had good times with Denise beating her previous week's time with 32.18, Sewell 25.24 and Wales 25.47.

The final Club 10 of the season brought some fantastic weather with it, seeing Horspool produce another PB of the year with a time of 22.30, followed by Sewell 25:50, Paul Willis 28.27 and Hallahan 32:59.

Sewell hit form towards the end of the summer after mixing it up between the 10-mile, 25-mile and 30-mile events. He recorded a season-best 10-mile time of 23:32 on the Cambourne F2A/10 course before producing another season-best in the 25-mile TT on the slightly longer Cambourne F2A/25 course. Then, in his only 30-mile TT of the season, he produced a fine time of 1:19:06 on the B30/8 hosted by Breckland CC.

Horspool has had a mixed summer of racing whilst flying the flag for the Wisbech Wheelers in a variety of locations. He started by racing in the Tour of Assen, a five-day Stage race in the Netherlands. This proved to be a very wet week of racing as he competed with some of the best youth riders from England and Europe.

On home soil, Hospool decided to have a go at racing the adults in two TLI road races hosted by Velo Lincoln on their Yarborough circuit, where he finished fourth and eighth respectively.

Then, with dad Graham Horspool, he tried Grass Track racing at Spalding. This was a great event which saw William finishing fourth in the U16s event as well as taking part in the men's 8K event where he managed to spend some time off the front in a break before being caught.

William Horspool then raced in the final of the National Youth 10mile TT near Hull where he finished as 27th male with a time of 23:00mins.

Wisbech Wheelers ride from the Freedom Bridge roundabout every Sunday morning at 9am. There are multiple groups to suit the different abilities of the rider and every club ride always has a café stop approximately halfway, so if you enjoy riding your bike and would like to ride with other like-minded people, why not join them?
