Wisbech netting again but weeks away from action

Wisbech Town Cricket Club are back in the nets but captain James Williams says it will be a couple of months before they are in match action again.

And the skipper also believes there will be no league fixtures for his team, with the season likely to consist of a number of reasonably local friendly
matches instead.

Players took part in net sessions last Saturday for the first time since coronavirus halted sporting activity in England this season, with 50-minute slots booked for two players each and the area thoroughly cleaned before the next players had a go.

Williams told the Citizen: “It has been very frustrating as every Saturday so far has seen glorious sunshine and we should be watching or playing cricket.

“When we start is a little bit up in the air at the moment, with the English Cricket Board pushing any start back to August 1. We might know more in the next couple of weeks.

“But the fact they have allowed us to get some one-on-one sessions started is positive for a lot of cricketers. You cannot just turn up though, you have to book in and it has to be managed and structured really well.

“It does not look like any sort of league season is going to happen so if we do get the opportunity to play any cricket, it will be down to clubs to book their own friendly games in.

“It would be nice to play some different teams such as Downham Market or North Runcton and stay reasonably local. We might as well try some different things’

“I think most teams are keen to get some sort of a season started. If we get any sort of cricket played then we will be happy.”
