Wisbech chairman slams 'keyboard warriors'
Wisbech Town chairman Paul Brenchley has hit out at "keyboard warriors" taking a snipe at his club.
And the Fenmen supremo has also backed Brett Whaley, saying the first team manager is here for the long term.
In an exclusive interview with the Citizen, Brenchley said: "Words are being bandied about in social media such as shambles, shameful and awful, and when they say that about the football club, as far as I am concerned, that's me.
"I just take umbrage with those keyboard warriors saying we are awful when we are doing a lot of work here and spending a lot of money.
"The buck stops at me, it's 100 per cent me. We have had a small gang here all summer working our socks off around the ground and, looking at it, I cannot see how they can say it's a shambles.
"We have not got the lowest budget in the league but geographically, it is very awkward. Newcastle Town came here with two Stoke City Academy players in their team.
"They can draw on them, but anyone who comes out of Peterborough United Academy is going to play in Peterborough, not come to Wisbech.
"And then we get comments about trying local players. There isn't anyone in Wisbech prepared to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays, travel away on a Tuesday night and get back late on a Saturday night.
"This is a hard league. Obviously we got a bum deal from the FA to be placed in a north east section but we have just got to get on with it.
"If we can stay up, or even if we finish bottom and no Step Five teams want to come up, next season there will be a new (Northern Premier League Step Four) division, running from Lincoln to Cambridge and that will be 100% better.
"We will be playing more locally, with more derbies, we will attract local players, financially it will be better.
"Fair enough, we are not doing it at the moment on the pitch but I am quite happy with what Brett has got together. I have been to every away game and I think there is potential there. I have got no reason or ambition whatsoever to get rid of Brett.
"I think he is here to stay. He has a long-term plan and he is bringing youngsters through. Brett would be the first to say he needs two or three old heads in there and I will 100% back him.
"Brett is here as long as he wants. Even if we get demoted, I will not be getting rid of him."
