Cambs County League clubs to vote on Champions League-type competitions

Clubs in the Cambridgeshire County League are being asked to vote on whether they wish to take part in Champions League-type competitions from April 10 to early June.

The League’s management committee announced on Friday that it was in favour of declaring the 2020/21 season ‘null and void’ and giving teams the option of taking part in the competition once lockdown restrictions are eased on March 29.

The FA has stated that grass roots football can take place until the end of June.

A Cambs League statement reads: “We reviewed the current position of the league, along with the number of games to be played in the remaining weeks left.

“We feel it is not viable to complete a full season as the pressure on players to play so many games in a short period is unreasonable, along with the number of facilities available.

“The recommendation, therefore, is that the 202/21 season is declared null and void.

“A further recommendation is that Champions League-style cup competitions are played throughout April and May, (starting on April 10), with finals being played at a neutral venue in early June.

“This alternative competition is not mandatory and clubs have been sent a form to complete to confirm entry.

“Clubs have been asked to confirm their decision by Friday, March 5. A league EGM will then follow on Monday, March 8 to confirm this and discuss plans for the rest of the season.”

Clubs were left slightly confused by the statement, with the league clarifying on Twitter that if clubs did not accept the Champions League option “then further discussions would be had at the clubs’ meeting on March 8 on how to proceed”.

Clubs have not been given a vote on whether the season resumes or not and it seems certain it will be declared null and void.

The Citizen understands the Champions League format will take into consideration divisions and ability as well as keeping games as local as possible.

Local teams invited to take place are: March Res and A Team, Wisbech St Mary Res, Walpole, Outwell Swifts and Res, Chatteris Town, Res and A Team, Benwick Ath and Res, Wimblington, Guyhirn and Res, Wisbech Acorns, Christchurch Magpies, Manea United and Res, March Academy and Res, Doddington United and Res and Fen Tigers.
