Wisbech Town Walking Football Club are champs by the seaside
Wisbech Town Walking Football Club didn’t concede a goal in six matches as they won their first tournament in two years in Lincolnshire on Sunday.
The Fenmen travelled to Sutton On Sea with a strong nine-man squad for the over-50s seven-a-side competition, with one player between 45 and 50 allowed.
Wisbech kicked the tournament off with a 0-0 draw against Stamford Strollers.
Game two was a 1-0 win against Grimsby Corinthians, with Warren Clark scoring from a penalty after Steve Wyness was fouled.
Game three saw the Fenmen beat host club Sutton Sharks A 4-0, Scott Sawers netting a pile driver in his hat-trick and Darren McManus also scoring.
In their final group game, Wisbech drew 0-0 with Louth, both teams qualifying for the semi-finals.
In the semi against Alford, McManus, Clark and Sawers were on target as Wisbech won 3-0.
Louth were again the opponents in the final, and Wisbech put in some high quality passing and moving to win 2-0, Clark and Sawers the scorers.
Manager Jonny Pearce said: “I couldn’t be more proud of the lads. We knew we had a strong squad but you never know what you will be up against.
“We played to our strengths and we went six games without conceding one goal which is some achievement. We have always been in the later end of tournaments but we wanted that winning feeling back and today we got it.”
Captain Richard Mellor added: “I felt great, but mainly chuffed with the team performance. Everyone played their part and it was great to be involved.”
Wisbech: John Knight, Ben Baylis, David Frosdick, Paul Murray, Richard Mellor, Darren McManus, Warren Clark, Scott Sawers and Steve Wyness.
