Chatteris Town 2 Soham United 0

Chatteris recorded a fifth straight home win as they maintained the pressure on leaders Over Sports.

After last week’s humbling 4-0 defeat to Sports, a response was needed and it came in the form of a competent performance against mid-table opponents, who could well have swung this contest in a completely different direction.

A well-taken brace from the promising Brandon Ransome ensured Town would climb into second and take the game away from their visitors.

The arguable changing point, however, was when Lilies goalkeeper Jordan Packi brilliantly denied Charlie Russell a ninth-minute lead from 12 yards, diving to his bottom-right after captain Simon Howard upended Russell following a Scott Flisher mistake on the edge of his penalty area.

This sparked Soham into life as Packi had to save Steve Dalby’s close-range effort, in the end-to-end style of the game. Hugh Stewart, who impressed on his first start since arriving from Whittlesford, hit the woodwork from close on 35 minutes, but Ransome poked in a menacing Gary Smith near-post cross a minute later.

Adam Conyard also displayed creativity having made a first start since moving from March Town.

Substitute Josh Brittin nearly found the net straight after the break with a driven effort towards the bottom-right, but Town’s persistence eventually paid off. Having latched onto a neat through pass from midfield, Ransome controlled and slotted past the helpless Brad Holmes.

It was not all one-way traffic, Packi having to tip over a soaring Dalby effort, before seeing Mark Allen’s header drift just wide.
