New Lilies boss Kaufman lifts first trophy with Bill Salisbury Memorial Cup at West Street

By Pete Woodhouse

Alex Kaufman won his first trophy as Chatteris Town manager as they retained the annual Bill Salisbury Memorial Cup on Tuesday by beating March 2-1.

The Lilies produced a fine second-half display to come from a goal down to defeat neighbours March Town United 2-1, who fielded a strong squad featuring four former Lilies players at West Street, writes Dan Mason.

Strikes from Jack Jefferson and Jack Saunders overturned a first-half deficit courtesy of Hares forward Toby Allen’s 26th-minute effort, registering a first pre-season victory and one not much sweeter than against their rivals.

This was a game of contrasting halves, with March looking to establish an early foothold through consistent pressure on the Lilies backline, and it soon paid off.

Following a quick breakaway, ex-Town forward Craig Gillies latched onto a misjudged header from Matt Stratton and his right-sided cross found Allen into the penalty area, whose first-time shot found the bottom-left corner.

It was this combination that looked to cause the biggest threat, but since taking the lead, their involvement was kept to a minimum as Town took the game to their opponents.

What was perhaps the changing point of the match was when March failed to convert their two clearest chances of the second half, with Jack Brand hitting a post and Gillies denied a tap-in by a goal-saving tackle from Lilies captain Simon Howard.

Kaufman’s men managed to turn the screw from the 55th minute when Jefferson smashed home an equaliser following a mistake from a goal-kick by Hares ‘keeper Simon Dalton.

Waves of Lilies pressure looked unbearable at times, and when the lively Matt-Harris Hercules was cynically fouled by Dalton on the edge of the 18-yard box, up stepped Saunders to curl home a powerful low free-kick round the wall to complete the turnaround.
