Mat McClure fastest of Wisbech Wheelers at VC Norwich Open ‘25’ while Jemma Redhead bags her best time

By Pete Woodhouse

Triathlete Mat McClure was the fastest of the Wisbech contingent in the re-run of the VC Norwich Open ‘25’, being just shy by two seconds of his own personal best with 52.14.

Not so disappointed was fast improving Jemma Redhead whose determined effort was rewarded with a new pb of 1.03.44 and Neil Empson, still smarting from the tumble he took in his last outing, rode strongly to 55.46.

Not so lucky was top Wisbech lady Becky Taylor who hit a pothole and punctured.

She stayed on board but said: “It felt more like a bomb crater when I hit it.”

The normally fast course has a concrete section which is crumbling and has become infamous due to the poor repairs at the edge of the road and on top of road spray, puddles can conceal major defects making even main roads dangerous to ride in the wet.

The Wisbech evening ‘10’ was cancelled for a fourth time on the previous Tuesday due to strong winds and torrential rain but the King's Lynn event went ahead on Wednesday and 60+ vets, Paul Willis and Denese Hallahan both rode (times are below).

Results, Wed, July 31, KLCC club ‘10’: P Willis (60+) 27.05, D Hallahan (60+ lady) 32.37

Sat, Aug 3, VC Norwich Open ‘25’ (re-run): M McClure 52.14, N Empson 55.46, J Talbot (40+) 57.21, S Emmett (40+) 59.39, J Redhead (40+ lady) 1.03.44.
