Wisbech cyclist William Horspool wins U12 Boston Wheelers Go-Ride Racing series at Tattershall overall

Wisbech Wheelers of all ages were racing this week.

In the under-12 category of the Boston Wheelers Go-Ride Racing series at Tattershall, William Horspool took two seconds, one third and a fourth place to give him victory in the series overall.

At the other end of the scale 72 year-old Roger Sewell, returning from serious illness, has stormed back with two 25mph-plus rides showing little loss in power despite his long lay-off.

If there were any doubts about the recovery powers of racing cyclists, well Wisbech rider Jason Kierman (St Ives CC) has worked his way back from serious injuries including a punctured lung received in a crash at the end of last season, and retained his national title on the track in the Scratch Race in which he held off the pack in a race run off at over 31 mph.

He also took third in the points race.

Another worthy of mention is Martin Gordon who only started racing in his 60s and, recovering from a hip replacement, agreed to race the cycle section for a team in the Outlaw Half Iron Man Triathlon at Holkham.

Gordon has improved his ‘10’ time by over six minutes this season and covered the lumpy 57 miles of the Holkham course in 3 hours, 16 mins. In the same event top Wisbech triathlete, Mat McClure, came second in the 35-39 age group taking just 2.28.58 to complete the cycling section.

Top Wisbech lady, Becky Taylor, rode another sub-four hour 100-miler in the EDCA Championships, taking 3rd in the ladies section. In the same race British-based Polish professional, Marcin Bialoblocki, took the British competition record at over 30 mph in an incredible 3.13.37.
